WTI crude opened Thursday, 27 August 2026, with a bit of swagger at $82.83, but it didn’t take long for that to fade. We closed the session sitting at $81.69, down $1.14, a 1.38% drop that honestly feels a little heavier than the number suggests. The range was tight, $1.92 from top to bottom, and the way we bled lower all afternoon tells me there’s real selling pressure underneath, not just noise.

Oil Price Today Shows a Bearish Rejection at $83.19

The high came early, $83.19, and we never got close to testing it again. That’s the pattern that bugs me. A quick spike to the top of the range at the open, then a steady grind down for the rest of the day. It’s the kind of price action that says sellers are willing to meet every bounce, and buyers aren’t chasing anything above $83.

We did hold above the $81.27 low, which is something. But barely. The fact that we tagged that level and couldn’t mount any kind of recovery is telling. If support was truly strong, we’d have seen a V-bounce or at least some aggressive buying into the close. Instead we just sort of limped into the settlement.

Why the Early Rally Fizzled

Part of it is positioning. The market was already long coming into today, and the early pop to $83.19 gave those traders an easy exit. You don’t need a big bearish headline to trigger profit-taking when everyone’s already in the same trade. The open was the liquidity event, and the algos took it.

Beyond that, there’s just no fresh catalyst to push us higher. The macro tape is quiet, and without a new driver, this market tends to drift back to wherever it feels comfortable. Right now, that’s apparently in the low $81s.

Key Levels to Watch After Today’s Slide

We’re sitting right on the first line of defense. The $81.27 low from today is now the number to beat on the downside. If we lose that, $80.81 is the next stop, and that’s where I’d expect to see some real buying interest. It’s a round-ish number and it’s been a pivot before.

Support Levels for WTI Crude

Support 1 is $81.27, today’s low. It held today, but it’s not a level I’d trust for anything more than a scalp. Support 2 at $80.81 is the more meaningful one. That’s where the chart gets interesting, and I think that’s where the dip buyers will show up in force.

Resistance Levels Above

Resistance 1 is $83.19, today’s high. We’ve now failed there twice in the last few sessions, so it’s becoming a fairly solid ceiling. Resistance 2 is $83.92, and honestly, we’re not even close to worrying about that until we can close above $83.20 with some conviction.

  • Current Price: $81.69
  • Open: $82.83
  • High: $83.19
  • Low: $81.27
  • Range: $1.92
  • Change: -1.14 (-1.38%)

Macro Forces Weighing on the Crude Price

The dollar’s been firm this week, and that never helps commodities priced in it. It’s not a dramatic move, but it’s enough to shave a few cents off the top of every barrel. And when you’re already struggling to find buyers, that’s all it takes to push the price down.

Demand expectations are also doing us no favors. The latest inventory numbers were mixed, and there’s no sign of the kind of drawdown that would give this market a reason to rally. We’re in that late summer lull where refinery runs start to ease and the market just kind of idles.

I’m not calling for a crash here. The geopolitical risk premium hasn’t evaporated, it’s just dormant. Any headline out of the Middle East could flip this thing around in an hour. But as of right now, the path of least resistance is lower.

Oil Price Today Verdict: Rangebound With a Bearish Bias

I’m not buying the rally yet, and I’m not chasing the downside either. Today’s action sets up a pretty clear range for tomorrow: $81.27 on the bottom, $83.19 on the top. Until we break one of those with volume, that’s the sandbox we’re playing in.

The bias is slightly bearish though. We’re closing near the lows, we’ve got resistance holding, and there’s no fresh bullish catalyst on the horizon. I’d be looking to sell bounces toward $82.50 or $83 rather than buying weakness, at least until we prove we can hold above $81.50 on a closing basis.

That said, I wouldn’t be surprised to see a dead-cat bounce tomorrow morning. That’s just how this market operates. The real question is whether any bounce holds, and given today’s action, I have my doubts. Let’s see how we open and whether the $81.27 level gets tested again before the weekend.
