WTI crude is trading at $84.72 as of the close on Wednesday, 19 August 2026, down 99 cents on the day. We opened at $85.71, tried to push higher early, tagged $86.10, and then just gave it all back. That’s a $1.79 range and it tells you everything about how conflicted this market is right now. Sellers showed up at resistance and buyers stepped in at support, but neither side has control yet.

Oil Price Today Shows a Bearish Reversal After Early Strength

The morning session looked decent. We gapped up slightly, held above $85.70 for a couple hours, and even poked through $86. That got some momentum traders excited. But the rally died right at that $86.10 level, which we’ve now hit three times in the last two weeks. Each test has been weaker than the last. That’s not a breakout pattern, that’s distribution.

Honestly, the reversal bothers me more than the actual drop. When a market can’t hold early gains on a day with no obvious headline catalyst, it usually means the underlying bid is thinning out. We closed near the low of the day at $84.31 before a small bounce into the settle. Not a great look for the bulls.

Volume and Momentum Behind the Crude Price Slide

Volume picked up on the move lower, which is the opposite of what you want to see if you’re long. Light selling on low volume is noise. Heavy selling into the close is conviction. We got the latter. The RSI on the hourly chart is rolling over from overbought, and the daily momentum is starting to point south again. If we lose $84.31 in the next session, this could get ugly fast.

Key Levels to Watch for WTI Crude After Today’s Drop

The $84.31 low from today is now the line in the sand. That’s Support 1 and we tagged it exactly. Below that sits $83.89, which was the pivot from early August. On the upside, $86.10 is the immediate ceiling, and then $86.78 if we somehow get a full reversal. I’d be surprised to see that happen without a news catalyst.

Support Levels for the Oil Price Today

Support 1 at $84.31 is fresh and tested. Support 2 at $83.89 is roughly 43 cents lower. If we break both, the next real floor is around $83 flat. That’s where the 50-day moving average sits, and it’s been reliable for the last month.

Resistance Levels for Crude Oil After the Rejection

Resistance 1 at $86.10 is now triple-tested and holding. Resistance 2 at $86.78 is the bigger prize. We haven’t seen $86.78 since mid-July. Every failed test at $86.10 weakens the case for a breakout, and today’s reversal adds another brick to that wall.

Fundamentals Behind the Oil Price Today Movement

The macro picture isn’t helping. Inventory data from the API showed a build that was larger than the whisper number, and that weighed on sentiment all afternoon. We’re also seeing some softness in Asian demand data that’s hard to ignore. Refinery margins are compressing, which means processors are pulling back on crude purchases.

And then there’s the dollar. The greenback firmed up overnight and that’s never good for crude. It’s not a massive move, but it’s enough to push commodities lower when they’re already struggling for direction.

On the supply side, OPEC+ chatter about potential output increases is still hanging over the market. Nothing official, but the rumors alone are capping upside. Geopolitical risk premiums have also faded a bit this week, which takes away another bid.

Verdict on the Oil Price Today and What I’m Doing Next

I’m not buying this dip yet. The rejection at $86.10 combined with the close near the low tells me the path of least resistance is lower. If we break $84.31 tomorrow, I’m looking at $83.89 and then $83. The range trade has been profitable for a while, but it’s getting tighter and that usually precedes a breakout. I’d rather wait for the breakout than fight the chop.

That said, I’m not shorting into support either. $84.31 has held twice now, and buying strength or selling weakness at the edges is the smarter play. If we get a daily close below $84.31, then I’ll flip short with a stop above $85. Until then, I’m flat and watching.

  • Current Price: $84.72
  • Open: $85.71
  • High: $86.10
  • Low: $84.31
  • Range: $1.79
  • Change: -0.99 (-1.16%)

The setup for tomorrow is straightforward. Watch the open. If we gap below $84.31, the bears take over and $83.89 is the first target. If we hold $84.50 in the first hour, we might see a retest of $85.50. I’m not forecasting a crash, but I’m also not pretending today’s action was bullish. It wasn’t.
