WTI crude opened the week at $85.06 and immediately looked heavy. We’re trading at $84.32 now, down 0.87% on the day, and honestly the tape feels worse than the headline number suggests. That gap between the open and where we sit now is the whole story so far.

Oil Price Today: Price Action Paints a Cautious Picture

We gapped up slightly at the bell, hit a high of $85.76 in early European hours, and then just bled out from there. The low came in at $83.89, which is exactly where I’d expect buyers to step in. It’s a $1.87 range, which is wide for a Monday, and the fact that we’re closing the session near the lows tells me the sellers aren’t done yet.

But here’s the thing. The volume profile doesn’t show panic. This isn’t a liquidation event, it’s a slow grind lower. That’s more concerning to me than a sharp drop, because it means there’s no capitulation, just steady selling into any bounce. Every rally attempt gets sold. That’s not a market that’s ready to turn.

Why the Midday Slump Matters for Crude Price

The midday action is where the character of the day gets set. We held $84 for a while, which felt constructive, but the break below that level around 14:00 London time triggered a fresh wave of selling. I’m not buying the rally off the low yet. One bounce off $83.89 doesn’t confirm anything, it just tells me there are buyers parked at that number.

Key Levels and Where the WTI Crude Price Finds Support

Levels are pretty clear right now. We’ve got a defined range and I’m watching the edges closely. The $83.89 low is the first line in the sand. After that, $83.45 is the next support, and that’s a level that held twice last week. If we lose that, the trade opens up to $82.50 in a hurry.

Support Levels to Watch on the Oil Price Chart

  • Support 1: $83.89 (today’s low, first buying interest)
  • Support 2: $83.45 (last week’s double-bottom area)

I’d be a buyer at $83.45 with a tight stop. The risk is defined and the reward is a trip back to $85. That’s a decent risk/reward for a day trade.

Resistance Levels Capping the Crude Price Advance

  • Resistance 1: $85.76 (today’s high, where sellers showed up)
  • Resistance 2: $86.47 (the 20-day moving average area)

Resistance at $85.76 is going to be tough to crack without a fresh catalyst. And $86.47 is a wall. I’ve seen this level reject buyers three times in the past two weeks. We’re not getting through that without something fundamental changing.

Fundamentals and Macro Forces Behind Today’s Oil Price Drop

There’s no single headline driving this, which is what makes it tricky. The dollar firmed up a bit overnight, that’s never great for crude. But the bigger weight is the demand picture. We had some weak manufacturing data out of Asia over the weekend and the market is starting to price in softer refining runs for the autumn.

Inventory expectations are also doing their thing. The consensus is for a build this week, and if that comes in bigger than expected, we could see another leg down. I don’t trade the guesses, I trade the print, but the positioning suggests a lot of people are already short ahead of the data.

OPEC chatter is quiet, which is unusual for the last day of August. Normally we get some guidance about the next meeting by now. The silence is making people nervous. It’s not a bearish signal on its own, but it’s removing a floor that was under the market.

My Verdict on the Oil Price Today and the Week Ahead

I’m not calling a top and I’m not calling a bottom. What I see is a market that’s rangebound and respecting its levels. The $83.89 to $85.76 range is the trade. Buy the low end, sell the high end, and don’t get greedy in the middle.

That said, the bias is slightly to the downside. We’ve made lower highs for three straight sessions and the close today near the lows doesn’t inspire confidence. If we break $83.45, I think we test $82.50 before the week is out. If we hold $83.89 into Wednesday, I’ll start to soften that view.

Honestly, the safest play here is to wait for the inventory data and let the market tell you where it wants to go. The range is wide enough that you don’t need to force a trade. Patience pays in a market like this.

For tomorrow, I’m watching the Asian session for a test of that $83.89 level. If it holds, we bounce. If it breaks, I’m with the sellers. Either way, I know my levels and I know my risk. That’s all you can ask for on a quiet Monday.
